During Winter and Spring, our Leadership Students will have the opportunity to jump into action! "Leadership by Doing" will be our emphasis! Through our "Promise Merced" Project, students will grow their leadership ability in the following areas:
Public Speaking- Students will present and offer "Promise Merced" to small groups at various organizations and community events, eventually building-up to larger audiences, while always working at their personal ability and comfort level. This is an excellent chance to build confidence in a leadership speaking role!
Leadership in Social Media- With social media being such a standard tool for this young generation, it is important for them to understand how to properly and safely use it. Students will utilize the power of social media to spread "Promise Merced". Parents, please let us know your comfort level with this, and we will cater to it. We will draw heavily on the concepts found in "Facebook for Parents" by Linda Fogg Phillips and Dr. BJ Fogg.
Leadership on a Web Page- Students will exercise writing skills and increase understanding of the power of words through managing our "Promise Merced" Web Page!

Managing a Campaign: Our younger students will help support and run the "Promise Merced Campaign" and will learn leaderships skill necessary to work together as a team and how to set and reach goals!
Hola, Amigos! Spanish
Age Group: K - 5th Grades
February 12 - May 21 (14 week session), Thursdays 12:00 - 1:00

Students will sing memorable songs in Spanish, play fun and captivating games, practice lots of Spanish vocabulary and have fun! ‘Hola, Amigos!’ is a basic Spanish course that will give kids a chance to explore the Spanish language first-hand. They'll learn basic phrases, numbers, colors and other useful Spanish vocabulary, while enjoying the vibrancy of the rich language through these fun activities. We are excited to spark the interest and love of learning for this wonderful, valuable language!

Cost: $149.00 + $20.00 materials fee
The students will display their artwork at the Merced Theatre in our BYL performing arts show in May called, "One... I Make a Difference!"
This Art Course designed to refine and expand each student's understanding of fundamental art techniques. Students will explore different art styles using various mediums. Each unit will be dedicated to one of the following art styles, with an emphasis each week in drawing and sketching:
Sculpting: Students will try their hand at sculpting while using pottery, carving, and modeling techniques. Parents, please let us know your comfort level with the carving. We will provide an alternate project if you would like.
Cartooning: While improving their personal sketching and drawing style, students will learn different aspects of cartooning, such as finding their own cartoon style, illustrating their cartoons, and creating their very own amateur comic strip. All the while, learning technique with pastels, ink, and pencil sketching.
Painting: Students will improve their skill level as they explore differences in techniques used in watercolor, and acrylic. They will practice different compositional skills while painting, still life, portraits, and landscapes.
Arts & Crafty Fun!

Enter the wonderful world of art! Arts & Crafty Fun will provide students with a fun, safe and interactive environment where they can express their creativity and imagination. We will explore the wonders of art, from the basic elements of drawing to the application of color and its role in communicating emotions to others around us. Albert Einstein said, “Creativity is contagious, pass it on!” Einstein understood the power of creativity, and the leadership that can happen through it! The students will display their creations at the Merced Theatre in our at our BYL performing arts show in May called, "One... I Make a Difference!"
